The work

The work I do is relational and focused on pattern. I don't run intake checklists. I don't assign homework. I pay attention to what happens in the session. The moments when something shifts or goes flat. The pattern that keeps showing up underneath the problem. Most people already know their own story. They still keep landing in the same place. What's missing is someone watching in real time, someone who can name what you cannot see from inside it. More on how I work, and how I work with couples.

Why people in Budapest pick online work with me

Three reasons repeat. Language, first. Hungarian is a wall even good learners hit, and the English-speaking therapy pool here is small and busy. Privacy, second. The expat scene runs through the same offices, schools, and bars, and I sit outside it. No Hungarian license, no NEAK billing, nothing on a TAJ record. Fit, third. Everyone I work with lives outside their home country. Your setup needs no translating. If you need medication, testing, or someone local, I will say so on the free call.

What people bring to online therapy

The people I work with in English come for a wide range of reasons: anxiety, depression, stress and burnout, anger management, grief and loss, relationship difficulties, loneliness, self-esteem issues, procrastination, sleep problems, attachment patterns, self-sabotage, perfectionism, identity questions, and existential concerns. Online counseling makes this work possible from wherever you are, whether you need an English-speaking therapist, a virtual counselor, or simply someone who can work in your language at a depth that matters.

How it works

Sessions are online via secure video call. I work with individuals and couples (60 minutes). Before your first session, we have a free 15-minute call to see if this feels like the right fit for you.

The Budapest patterns

The city collects a certain crowd. The service-center floors along Váci út and down the Danube. Morgan Stanley, BlackRock, Citi, MSCI, thousands of people running global work in English. Medical students grinding through Semmelweis. Their Hungarian stalls at the pharmacy counter. Remote workers who came for the price of a District VII flat. They stayed past the plan. Couples where one partner is Hungarian and family dinners run in a language the other reads by tone. Hungarians back after London or Berlin, more at home in English than they planned to be. Budapest is warm, cheap by Western standards, and easy to live in without ever being inside it. That gap fills a lot of my Budapest hours.

Hungarian mental healthcare, briefly: NEAK, the TAJ card, and why therapy is mostly private

The public route exists. With a TAJ card you see your háziorvos, get a referral, and land in a psychiatric outpatient clinic. It is free and it works in Hungarian. It is built around medication and short contact, not weekly depth work. Waits vary, and English is luck. So therapy in Hungary runs mostly as a private market, fairly priced by Western standards. The English end of that market is a short list, and the list fills.

One more thing worth knowing. Hungary protects the psychotherapist title. It takes state clinical training, on top of a degree in psychology or medicine. I do not hold Hungarian titles, and I do not work inside the Hungarian system. I am a US-trained therapist. I work privately, from abroad. No NEAK, no TAJ record, no diagnosis filed here. For medication or testing you would see a Hungarian clinician. I will help you find the right door.

Questions people ask from Budapest

Does NEAK or my TAJ card cover therapy with you?
No, and by design. I work privately from outside Hungary. You pay directly, and nothing is billed to NEAK or entered on a TAJ record.
How does therapy in Budapest usually work for internationals?
Mostly in private practice. The public route runs in Hungarian. It starts with a GP referral into clinic care. Most expats pay out of pocket. The small English pool fills fast, so many go online.
Are you a psychotherapist under Hungarian law?
No. Hungary protects that title, and I do not hold it. I am a US-trained therapist in private practice. My training is on the about page.
My partner is Hungarian. Do you work with couples like us?
Yes, often. Mixed couples are a large share of my practice, and the work deals directly with what gets lost between languages and families. Sessions are in English, on one screen or from two places.

Selected research on this approach

My work is psychodynamic and depth-oriented. These are some of the studies on the effectiveness of that kind of therapy. They describe research on the method in general, and are not claims about any individual outcome.
