You publish. You teach. You sit on committees. And you still feel behind. The goalposts moved again. The colleague who published less got the grant. Underneath the productivity is a suspicion you have carried since your first seminar: that you do not belong here. The feeling that you are not enough did not start in academia. Academia just built an entire evaluation system around it. You were recruited into this system because the pattern of earning worth through performance was already installed, in a family where love tracked achievement. The university did not create the pattern. It perfected it.
I hold an MA in sociology from UC Berkeley. I understand the academic world because I was in it. I do not offer career coaching or wellness tips. I work with the characterological pattern underneath the burnout: the way you learned that your value was contingent on what you produced. No institutional records. Completely private.
